Group Classes (In-Person and Hybrid)

  • Music Appreciation: The Music of Bob Dylan.  This course explores the music and cultural impact of Bob Dylan. We will listen to music from albums across his long career, from the anthemic The Times They Are A-Changing’ (1964) to the existential musings of Time Out Of Mind (1997), looking at song forms, lyrical approaches, studio production, and more. Dylan has continually reinvented these songs throughout his life, presenting new and often surprising interpretations in correspondence with his ever-changing stylistic evolution. We will not only explore how Dylan redefined his own songbook, but also interpretations by other artists, like Odetta, Jimi Hendrix, and The Byrds. We will also consider how Dylan’s work interfaced with a variety of cultural and historical contexts, like the Beat Generation and Civil Rights Movement.

It’s a chance to work on musical and dramatic interpretation, work through nerves and performance anxiety, and for the students to learn from each other. So, let’s embrace our inner music conservatory roots! Come, bring a piece you already know, and get ready to work in the studio to make it performance-ready, with the help of your peers!

Online Classes

  • Sizzlin’ Summer Shakespeare.  Brush up your Shakespeare and get ready to laugh with a summer of four of Shakespeare’s best comedies, in opera and musical theater. We will begin with Verdi’s masterpiece, Falstaff, (which is based on The Merry Wives of Windsor), and then move to Cole Porter’s hilarious broadway musical, Kiss Me Kate (based on The Taming of the Shrew), which premiered in 1948. From there, we go to Benjamin Britten’s “modern” opera from 1960, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and finally a current Broadway show: & Juliet, a wildly popular musical that reimagines the story of Romeo and Juliet. & Juliet premiered in 2022, and follows Juliet’s life after Romeo’s death, giving her a fresh start and a chance to explore love and life on her own terms. 4 weeks, 4 comedies. This class gives us a chance to explore them all.
