The FMDG Music School welcomed current students back in January for another semester full of lessons, classes, concerts, and performances. An extended welcome also goes out to new students who have joined the FMDG community.
The theme for the FMDG Music School’s 2024 Met concert is water. Both youth and adult students had the opportunity to explore art related to this theme through accessible guided tours at the Met Museum in January. From sitting around an Italian water fountain, to experiencing the tranquility of a Chinese garden, to drawing meaning from 20th Century American paintings, students came away excited and inspired to prepare for this years Met concert. The concert will be held on Saturday, May 11, at the Grace Rainey Rogers Auditorium, at the Met Museum.
On January 23, a group of adult students attended a special concert at Carnegie Hall featuring jazz pianist, Marcus Roberts, and the Philadelphia Orchestra. On the program was an arrangement of George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue for jazz trio and orchestra. 2024 marks the 100th anniversary of Gershwin’s popular musical composition and this performance was one of many events this year to mark the occasion. After the concert the students had the opportunity to meet Marcus Roberts backstage and this chance encounter capped the evening outing.
On January 27 FMDG Music School students attended another concert at Carnegie Hall this time featuring pianist, Nobuyuki Tsujii, and the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra. Nobuyuku Tsujii performed Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 1 amongst a program of arrangements for chamber orchestra.
On February 26, the Conversations with The Fil online interview series continues with a panel discussion on large print music. Past attendees of this series will recall a discussion on braille music transcription in November 2023. On the next installment Richard Thai, Program Manager, will moderate a discussion with musicians, Mark Walton (AUS) and Georgia Steel (UK).
