The end of the 2024-2025 year brought about many events celebrating the achievements and progress of FMDG Music School students.
The Fil’s adult students performed in a showcase at 92nd Street Y on May 16. From a Chopin waltz, to a Shostakovich violin duet, to a Beatles hit song, the variety of the program represented the wide range of styles taught. After solo performances on piano, voice, guitar, and violin, the Latin Ensemble, led by Pablo Rodriguez, concluded the program with a short set of music from South America.
At the adult recital Maya Graves was presented with the Florence Dix Kronsky Award. The Kronsky award is presented to a student who has made significant contributions to the Music School community and to the community at large, promoting advocacy and outreach through performances.
Two weeks later on May 31, students of Fernando Garcia (drum teacher) performed renditions of classic jazz standards, rock songs, and latin jazz. Rounding out the recital program were performances by the CMPYP drum circle, as well as an an eclectic ensemble led by Anthony Vine (composition teacher).
In the final week of the spring semester it was time for remote students to shine in a special online event of musical sharing. Both youth and adult students from across the country including Colorado, Maryland, New Jersey, North Carolina and Oregon, got to share recordings and support each other.
Over the years the CMPYP recitals have grown to include students performing on piano, voice, strings, woodwinds, and rhythm section instruments. On June 7, the Spring 2025 CMPYP recital featured piano and voice students. A special mention goes to CMPYP student, Haowen Deng, who performed a movement from a Haydn Piano Concerto, accompanied by a guest string quartet. Haowen is a student of Jennifer Apsel (piano faculty). The recital culminated in a performance by the CMPYP Youth Chorus, co-directed by Michelle Trovato and Cyrus von Hochstetter.
