Fall 2025 at the Fil is underway and there is much to look forward to this semester including new classes, events, and performances. The Fil extends a warm welcome to all new students, volunteers, and extended community partners.
New and returning adult students started the Fridays at the Fil program on September 5. On Fridays students can study piano, voice, guitar, drums, violin, music theory, and music production. Students also have the opportunity to take group classes such as a voice lab or tap dance. Rounding out the offerings is the popular and growing Latin Ensemble, which explores the music of South America.
On September 6 the CMPYP (Comprehensive Music Program for Young People) began with a downbeat at 9 AM. Every Saturday youth students from across the boroughs come to 92Y for individual lessons, group classes, and ensembles. They benefit not only from individual instrument study but also ensemble experiences and a focus on music literacy through braille and large print music. To find out more about the CMPYP visit the Youth Classes page.
The first performance on the Fil’s Fall calendar is at Queens Night Market on Saturday, October 4. Hear students and faculty perform a set of music at 5:00 PM and stay for the devious food from the market vendors. This performance is free and open to the public.
This semester brings two new 4-week online group classes. Fans of Bob Dylan will enjoy the exploration and discussion in The Music and Cultural Impact of Iconic Musician and Composer Bob Dylan, taught by faculty member, Anthony Vine. In October, Beethoven’s ‘Ode to Joy’: The Symphony That Changed the World, will be co-taught by The Fil’s faculty, as well as a special guest. For more information and to register for these classes visit Online Classes.
The adult chorus turns a new leaf this semester with Cyrus von Hochstetter (faculty) as music director, and Nora Bartosik (faculty) as collaborative pianist. They continue a strong choral history and tradition at The Fil. Hear the adult chorus on December 11 at the annual Caroling with the Fil at the Met, and also on December 16 for a special evening concert at VISIONS Selis Manor.
